OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- State officials said a broken valve may have caused the oil spill into the San Francisco Bay last month.
The Dubai Star was receiving fuel Forged Steel Valves oil from a barge operated by Foss Maritime about two miles south of the Bay Bridge on October 30.
Everyone thought the port, or left side tank was filled and the crew went to watch the right side tank. ListenKCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports But Steve Sawyer, Deputy Council for the Water power control valves Office of Oil Spill and Prevention said that's when the trouble started.
"After they filled up the first fuel tank, something happened, either a malfunctioning valve or the valve failing to close," Sawyer said. "But oil kept going into the port side bunker tank, and everybody now is on the starboard side of the vessel monitoring the starboard bunker tank while the oil is going out on the port side."
400-800 gallons were spilled. Foss API Cast Steel Valves also failed to deploy containment booms in time. Sawyer said they are continuing investigations into the spill.
